Home Internet Security: Untangle Next Generation (NG) Firewall – Part 2

Let’s dive deeper into the configuration options of the Untangle Firewall.

The “Network” config option has all the info to set up the device to talk on your network.
I should mention now that to “close” a panel, you need to visit the lower right of your screen and choose an option. I say this because, on my big monitor, it was not apparent where I was to go and commit my changes. The icons look like the ones below.

Interfaces section allows you to set up the bridging interface and the addressed interface. Bridged is the interface on the inside where all your internal traffic comes from. Untangle takes that and works its magic and then moves it to its external or addressed interface. The addressed one has an IP address and sends your traffic to your router/modem to travel to the Internet. Incoming traffic from the Internet works the reverse way.
My configuration is below. Yours will vary depending upon the number of NICs in your system and how you have attached them to your network.
The only thing I had to configure in the Network section was the Interfaces pane.

This one has nothing that you have to configure aside from an administrative user account (which is done during set up).

This is the panel where you set up an email address to be used to send the Untangle reports to you. Untangle, as we’ll see later, has reports that it can send daily, weekly and monthly to an email address. Below is how this screen looks. You’ll need to configure it according to your email provider’s settings for sending emails. This would be an outgoing or SMTP email server.

Local Directory

Here is a neat section of the system. It is where you set up local user accounts to be leveraged in other applications such as the captive portal app. pretty straight-forward. Set up username, password and other content.

Within this section you can schedule how you want to handle upgrading the Untangle system be it manually or via an automated schedule.

Several important places are within this area:
  • Regional – Set your time zone
  • Support – Redo your setup wizard
  • Backup and restore settings from the Untangle server
And that is it for the configuration of the system. Pretty simple for the core Untangle app. The real magic happens within the other apps in Untangle.
